(More customer reviews)I recently purchased this phone as part of an upgrade with T-Mobile. Its one of the very few phones available now that really is basically designed for making phone calls, and not much else. It is also one of the vanishing breed of phones that has a decent size number and operation key layout inside, for those of us that are not all that fond of the extreme downsizing going on in phones today. My fingers are rather large and it took all my concentration with my old phone to dial a number or use the menu without ending up somewhere else on the screen. The number pad and menu keys are just about as big and easy to use as any phone you will find today, and have a nice raised rubber like feel. Its clear precise key layout, along with its price and basic feature design is the main reason I selected this phone.
The T139 is a basic flip phone that is very thin both on the top and bottom when opened. Its exterior is a rather cheap feeling plastic, rather than the rubberized feel of my old phone that I preferred. I solved that problem very easily by purchasing a rubberized shell like case that fits over the phone perfectly, and that I have left a link for at the end of this review. Opening the 139 finds a nice size screen that is not only very bright, but can be adjusted to your liking. It also has a dim feature that will allow it to remain lit after a selected amount of time, but save a little on your battery. The back light on the phone is far better than my old phone, and the best I have had in any phone. It can be selected to stay on up to a generous 3 minutes, while my old one's maximum was a very aggravating 20 seconds. Unfortunately the on screen display of the signal strength and battery is very small and a little hard to see despite the screen size and brightness. Fortunately the standby and talk time on this phone is generous enough, so the battery is not something you have to check often. Easily 4 hours talk time, and 6 days standby. About what you would expect for a bottom line basic phone.
All the basic functions of this phone are easily accessible, and the menu is straight forward and easy to navigate. Which as it turned out was a very good thing. For the 139s manual was just about the worst and explained the least of any one I have run into. You're pretty much on your own for finding new ring tones, adjusting security, figuring the alarm, and all the other usual accessories and preferences. The 139 is very comfortable to hold despite its being quite thin, and the ear piece is nice and large enabling it as a very clear receiver. Among the many preferences you can choose from, one of my favorites is the ability to assign a different ring to any contact, or number that you may like. That way you can tell who's calling by just the ring tone. My only complaint with 139 that is worth mentioning is both the ring volume and call volume for listening are not all that generous for those that are hard of hearing. Both the ring volume and call volume have 7 steps, and I keep both on 6, or one step down from the loudest setting. Even at its highest setting the ring volume is not that loud at all in my opinion. Fortunately they have turned out to be sufficient, but I think if you are hard of hearing, you may have to up both volumes to the full level, or move up to a higher quality phone. Fortunately, the 139 has a crystal clear reception that is the best that I personally have heard in any phone. For a budget basic phone, I think its the finest you will be able to locate.
In conclusion, here is my short list of the t139s best and sorriest:
The Good: Its number pad and menu feel and size. Clear bright display, long back light selection, and very clear reception.
The Bad: Less than generous volume, very small icons for battery and signal strength, thin rather cheap... slip out of your hand plastic exterior. In conclusion, I recommend the t-139 for anyone that has fat fingers and likes or needs a nice big easy to use number and menu pad layout. I also recommend it as a good basic phone that does all it needs to do at a very reasonable price. Trust me when I tell you there is not much of a selection at this price, and nothing that I feel is any better than the 139. I recommend it highly for the purpose of a good comfortable, clear sounding basic cell phone. Also, I highly recommend the following hard shell rubberized case for the 139 that I purchased here that fits the phone precisely, and is very comfortable while giving your phone some protection. It comes in basic black or a variety of colors and styles.
